Universities

There are 39 Australian universities.There are also many other recognized higher education institutions. Many Australian universities have overseas branch campuses, twinning arrangements and exchange programs for students and teaching staff worldwide. Australia has approximately 4000 formal agreements with universities around the world. Australian Universities have three primary roles:

• Storing knowledge;
• Transferring knowledge to others;
• Creating knowledge.

Australian Universities, By State

Northern Territory, Darwin is the capital city the Northern Territory Australia. Situated on the Timor Sea. Darwin has a population of 127,500, making it by far the largest and most populated city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, but the least populous of all Australia's capital cities. It is the smallest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities, and acts as the Top End's regional centre.

Australian Universities Ranking

ANU drops 11 places in the world rank to lose number one Australian ranking to University of Melbourne. University of Queensland moves into the top 100 for the first time taking over 3rd place in the Australian rankings from the University of Sydney which slips to fourth in the Australian rankings.

Group of 8 Universities

The Group of Eight (Go8) is a coalition of leading Australian universities, intensive in research and comprehensive in general and professional education.

ANU

The University was established to be of enduring significance in the post-war life of the nation " to support the development of national unity and identity, to improve Australia’s understanding of itself and its neighbors, and to contribute to economic development and social cohesion.

Sydney University

The birth of the University of Sydney in 1850 broke with the traditions of Britain’s ancient universities by admitting students on academic merit rather than on the basis of religion or social class. The University of Melbourne

Established in 1853, the University of Melbourne is a public-spirited institution that makes distinctive contributions to society in research, learning and teaching and engagement.

University of Queensland

The University of Queensland was established by an Act of State Parliamenton December 10, 1909 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the colony of New South Wales. Its foundation four months later made it the first university in the State and the fifth in the nation.

Monash University

Monash University was established in Melbourne, Australia in 1958. The early vision was to create a research-focused tertiary institution with an emphasis on science and technology. As Monash has always done, though, they quickly moved beyond the bounds of expectation.

UNSW

The University was incorporated by Act of the Parliament of New South Wales in Sydney in 1949, but its character and idea can be traced back to the formation of the Sydney Mechanics Institute in 1843, leading to the formation of the Sydney Technical College in 1878.

University of Adelaide

The University of Adelaide is consistently ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world. They produced numerous Nobel Prize winners and more than 100 Rhodes Scholars.

UWA

Macquarie University

Curtin University

In December 1986 the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT) was formally made a university, taking its name from the influential and widely-revered former Prime Minister of Australia, John Curtin. Curtin University is a multi-campus university

Queensland University of Technology

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a highly successful Australian university with an applied emphasis in courses and research. Based in Brisbane with a global outlook, it has 40,000 students, including 6000 from overseas (QUT Statistics), and an annual budget of more than AU$500 million.

Swinburne University

George Swinburne arrived in Australia as a migrant in 1886 and quickly established himself as a businessman and civic leader. He was also a practical visionary. In 1907 he put forward a proposal to establish a technical college in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

UOW University

The University of Wollongong (UOW) is a leading Australian university with an international reputation for excellence.

Flinders University

Flinders University takes its name from English navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the southern Australian coastline in 1802. Its crest includes a reproduction of Flinders’ ship ‘Investigator’ and an extract from his book A Voyage to Terra Australia.

University of Canberra

More than 12,000 students currently attend the University. Some 1600 of them live on campus. They come from local and regional areas, every state and territory in Australia and 90 other countries. Academic standards are high and career results are excellent. The University has produced over sixty five thousand graduates since 1970.

University of Newcastle

University of Tasmania

Charles Sturt University

Charles Sturt University's 20th anniversary year in 2009 provided an opportunity to reflect on how far they have come as an institution. While they are 20 years a University, our history of engagement in professional education and state of the art, relevant research spans more than 100 years with the establishment in 1895 of the Bathurst Experimental Farm.

ACU

Australian Catholic University (ACU) was opened on 1 January 1991 following the amalgamation of four Catholic tertiary institutions in eastern Australia - the Catholic College of Education Sydney in New South Wales, the Institute of Catholic Education in Victoria, McAuley College of Queensland, and Signadou College of Education in the Australian Capital Territory.

Sunshine Coast University

Located in one of the country's fastest growing regions, the University of the Sunshine Coast campus at Sippy Downs has grown to accommodate more than 7,000 students. Planning began for the Sunshine Coast University College in 1994. The University opened in 1996, becoming the first greenfield university to open in Australia since 1971.

Ballarat University

The University of Ballarat (UB) is Australia's only regional multi-sector university. We are the third oldest site of higher learning in Australia, and offer secondary schooling, TAFE, higher education, and research opportunities. We have six campuses; the Mt Helen, SMB and Camp Street campuses in Ballarat, and the Horsham, Stawell and Ararat campuses. We also work with a range of partner institutes across Australia and the world.

ECU

CQU

In 1967, the University commenced operations as the Queensland Institute of Technology (Capricornia) and in 1971 became the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education. They were renamed the University College of Central Queensland in 1990 and gained full university status on 1 January 1992. At that time they were known as the University of Central Queensland. The name was changed on 1 January 1994 to Central Queensland University. in 2008, following a rebranding exercise and still named Central Queensland University we became known as "CQUniversity Australia". Today, we operate from six regional locations in Central Queensland with campuses in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay and Bundaberg and learning sites at Emerald and four metropolitan campus locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

University of Southern Queensland

USQ is a fully accredited Australian Government University, with our students coming from across Australia and all around the world. Over 80 nationalities are represented across our three Australian campuses and there are more than 25 000 USQ students, just like you, who are completing their studies in Australia or in one of our 100 different countries around the world.

Charles Darwin University

The seed of CDU dates back to Darwin in the 1950s. With no offices or permanent staff, adult education classes in typing, shorthand and French were first conducted in school premises and taught by teachers working outside of normal hours. Darwin’s Adult Education Centre’s first full-time Principal Harold Garner brought tremendous energy to the role. On enrolment day the Centre resembled an ant’s nest, thriving with activity.

Victoria University

Victoria University (VU) was founded in 1916 as Footscray Technical School. After successive mergers with TAFE colleges in Melbourne's western suburbs, VU was established in 1990. Today, VU is one of the largest and most culturally diverse education institutions in Australia. We are one of only five multi-sector universities offering TAFE and higher education courses.

Bond University

On May 15, 1989, Bond University welcomed its first cohort of 322 students at its brand new, state-of-the-art campus on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Modelled on the traditions of the world’s most elite educational institutions, the vision for Australia’s first private, not-for-profit university was to provide an exclusive educational experience of the highest international standards, under the tutelage of the country’s leading academics.

Notre Dame University

The University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA) is one of the rising stars of Australian universities. Founded through an Act of the Parliament of Western Australia in December 1989, it now has over 9000 students enrolled on its three campuses in Fremantle, Sydney and Broome.

Southern Cross University

Southern Cross University is a highly regarded Australian public university established under its own Act of Parliament. The University welcomes the enrolment of international students in its courses and is proud of its commitment to its international programs.

Murdoch University

At Murdoch, they have more than 18,000 students and 1400 staff, including 2000 overseas students from about 90 countries. That’s more than 19,400 unique stories, backgrounds and ways of thinking that help them to make a difference in the world.
