    The Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT) provides high quality English language teaching in a friendly and supportive environment at the University of Western Australia.

    Courses and programs

    Our English language courses are a unique blend of learning and cultural awareness.

    You will develop skills in English while learning about Australian culture from a variety of tasks, activities and projects.

    Our specialist English language teachers use real and practical experiences to make learning exciting. They will help you get the skills for your academic studies at UWA and the life-long learning of English.

    Accredited English language programs

    Include:

    Each five-week General English teaching module is taught through interesting topics, including about Australia and its society. And you will develop your ability to communicate clearly in English along with a variety of useful language skills including:

    • reading and understanding different types of English texts
    • writing clearly and accurately
    • taking part with ease in conversations and discussions
    • listening to and understanding different varieties of spoken English
    • speaking clearly and fluently with easily understood pronunciation
    • using grammar and vocabulary to convey meaning well

     

    If you wish to develop your English language ability for business and employment and if you are at the upper-intermediate to advanced level, then Business English classes are for you. Each of the five-week module interesting business topics such as: marketing, international business and tourism. Through topics like these you can develop your ability to:

    • conduct fluent and easily understood conversations and discussions about business topics
    • give and take part in presentations
    • use business vocabulary to express yourself clearly and to understand what you hear and read
    • listen easily to different varieties of spoken English
    • read and understand a range of business texts
    • write accurate reports, letters and other kinds of business communication with the right type of style
    • communicate effectively in business and social settings and understand the business protocols of different cultures

    During this course you will also learn how to communicate effectively in business and social settings and understanding cross-cultural business protocols.

     

    If your language ability is between the upper-intermediate to advanced level and if you want to develop your English language ability in preparation for tertiary studies in an English speaking country, then we recommend you consider enrolling in English for Academic Purposes. In each five-week module you will develop your skills to:

    • take notes during talks and lectures
    • give and take part in seminars and presentations
    • read and understand academic articles
    • write academic texts clearly and accurately
    • conduct library and internet research effectively
    • use information technology to support your learning, and
    • learn about how to adapt to the academic culture of an Australian university
