    MIT’s General English classes teach students how to use English in a variety of social and personal situations. Our teachers help students develop skills in listening and speaking, reading and writing. We also help students gain necessary knowledge in order to continue further study in EAP courses.

    English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

    The EAP course is designed to give students an introduction to the academic culture and English-language requirements of Australian higher education. This course is ideal for students wishing to undertake higher education in Australia. The EAP course is designed to enable the students to proceed to courses at Diploma, Bachelor, or Postgraduate level.

    The course includes reading comprehension, listening and note-taking, essay and report writing skills, oral presentation and debating skills, mastering academic speech, reference and research skills, examination skills, as well as workshops for grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Avoiding plagiarism by introducing effective referencing, and summarizing skills is also included in the course.

    This course consists of printed materials, computer based learning classes (2 hours) library access, excursions

    Course outcomes

    At the end of the course students would have:

    • planned and delivered formal and informal presentations
    • participated effectively in group discussion including asking and answering questions
    • successfully completed exchange of information and/or services via telephone
    • been able to extract key information including writers intentions in range of different text types
    • been able to understand and respond in culturally appropriate manner to situations and contexts in specialisations of medicine, business and ICT streams
    • learnt how to use specialist lexis in speaking and writing; understood specialist lexis in aural and written texts
    • learnt how to produce range of effective texts relevant to each specialisation
    • devised research topic based on specialisation.
    • Identified and used relevant sources from journals, reports, surveys, statistics, literature, internet, newspapers etc.
    • Learnt how to use word, excel, PowerPoint, email and internet
    • Learnt how to take notes from lectures, seminars, phone calls, written texts, people
    • prepared study timetable, sourced practice material and devised strategies for exams

    Course Outcomes

    At the end of the course students would have:

    • Studied and practised all parts of the exam (use of English, reading, writing, listening and speaking)
    • Been able to answer various types of questions such as; multiple - choice fit in removed sentences in to a text, etc based on a written text.
    • Been able to read the media for information quickly and with good understanding
    • Been able to give an opinion and reason in a written form
    • Been able to make notes while someone is talking
    • Been able to write a letter including non – standard requests
    • Been able to demonstrate the knowledge of a range of collocations, phrasal verbs and adverbial phrases.
    • Been able to demonstrate the understanding of the subject verb agreement
    • Been able to demonstrate an ability to follow a talk on a familiar topic
    • Been able to ask for factual information and is able to understand the answer
    • Been able to maintain a conversation on a relatively wide range of topics
    • Been able to express own opinion, and present arguments to a limited extent
    • Been able to give descriptions of things and pictures
    • Been able to agree and disagree on a given topic.

    Course outcomes

    At the end of the course students would have:

    • Studied and practised all parts of the exam (use of English, reading, writing, listening and speaking)
    • been able to demonstrate the ability to read at a pace quick enough to cope with an academic course
    • been able to read with understanding a variety of sources, registers, topics and lexical fields
    • been able to demonstrate the ability to take notes in context of meetings and lectures
    • been able to write most types of formal and informal letters
    • been able to demonstrate the ability to write a piece of work which shows an ability to communicate
    • been able to demonstrate the knowledge of a range of collocations, understanding of the shades of meaning differentiating sets of similar words and complementation
    • been aware of grammar accuracy; verb forms, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions, determiners, etc
    • been able to understand lengthy interviews and discussions
    • been able to demonstrate an ability to pick up nuances of meaning/opinion
    • been able to contribute effectively to meetings and seminars within own area of work
    • been able to keep up a casual conversation with a good degree of fluency, copying with abstract
