      Northern Territory Schools

      Through quality strategies, programs, people, partnerships and systems, the Department of Education and Training will grow educated, skilled and smart Territorials. They provide quality early childhood services and education for all young Territorials, with a focus on meeting the needs of Indigenous students, leading to jobs, training and further education. In the training business area, they work to increase access to training pathways for Territorials to build or expand their skills so they can contribute to and benefit from the Territory's development.

      • They employ about 4500 people across the Northern Territory, including about 3800 teachers, principals and other school staff.
      • Every school day, They provide public education to about 30,000 students in 150 schools.
      • The Indigenous school-aged population in the Northern Territory of 39.5 per cent is significantly higher than the national average of 4.1 per cent.

      International services

      The Department's International Services Branch coordinates all of our international involvement. This includes:

      • recruiting, placing and providing pastoral care for international students (including dependants of people who hold temporary resident visas)
      • overseeing the Secondary Student Exchange Program and Teacher Exchange Program
      • organising Study Tours
      • advising schools on international activities such as overseas excursions
      • managing the Homestay Program for overseas secondary students
      • Northern Territory registrations for the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS)
      • About 31 per cent of our school workforce is based in remote locations.
