    UNSW Engineering Program Structure

An engineering degree provides remarkable career options. But how do you know what kind of engineer you want to be when you are just out of school? At UNSW, we have facilitated the decision-making process by providing students with the option to enroll in the flexible first year program. Rather than have to decide on your area of specialization, and enroll in a specific branch of engineering right away, we give you time decide.

Those enrolling in the flexible program need to transfer to a specific discipline at the end of Year 1. In 2011, UNSW commenced a review of all undergraduate programs offered at the University. The review is ongoing, and new programs and program revisions will be progressively introduced for students starting in 2012 and beyond.

Engineering program structures have been reviewed to ensure consistency of majors in individual and concurrent programs. Key elements of the review include:

    • All single Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degrees remain at a duration of four years
    • Each Engineering program taken concurrently has a core component of three and a half years
    • Engineering programs taken concurrently will typically take between five and five and a half years to complete
    • The new Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Arts concurrent degree will take five and a half years to complete, but by taking the Arts Minor in Mathematics this reduces to five years
    • The new Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Law concurrent degree will take six and a half years to complete, but by choosing an appropriate thesis topic and final year electives this may be reduced to six years

The Faculty of Engineering is committed to offering flexible degrees that give students a wide variety of study options and career paths, whilst maintaining the academic standards demanded of a UNSW Engineering graduate.
