Pharmacy and Applied Science at La Trobe University, Bendigo

La Trobe University has one of the oldest histories in pharmacy and science in Victoria. Although the School of Pharmacy and Applied Science was formed in 2005, the first pharmacy degree was taught at the Bendigo College of Mines, La Trobe's antecedent institution, from 1879 to the mid-1930's. Our Bachelor of Science degree also has a long history in the region.

But it really is our modern approach that I want to tell you about - modern in our concept of producing innovative courses, whether they are in Pharmacy or in Science, modern in our approach to teaching and research. We believe we are a friendly and open School with each member of staff placing high emphasis on teamwork and teaching and research. Being small has advantages and we take pride in producing graduates who seem to be highly employable in the fields of pharmacy and various scientific disciplines. I look forward to meeting you one day, to personally welcome you to this lovely campus in this thriving regional City of Bendigo.

    Why study Pharmacy?

Our program addresses the shortage of pharmacists in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia. We focus on rural health issues and the integration of science into a practical healthcare setting. Develop skills in achieving the best patient outcomes, improving patient health, drug action, clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and effectiveness, and providing drug information. Experience being a pharmacist and a primary healthcare team member through a practical placement in regional Victoria. Students will soon access some of the best teaching and research facilities in the world with the construction of a new $94 million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) building. LIMS focuses on training researchers to turn molecular science, biotechnology and nanotechnology research into medical solutions.

    Career opportunities

Graduates are prepared for work in any pharmacy setting including rural pharmacies, community or hospital pharmacies and Australian Defence Forces’ pharmacy services. You can purchase a pharmacy business if you register with the Pharmacy Board of Victoria. Or you can pursue opportunities in biotechnology, food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paints, environmental science and management, and teaching.
