History of the School of Pharmacy and Molecular Sciences
The units that form the current School of Pharmacy and Molecular Sciences have enjoyed a long and successful history within the University.Chemistry was one of the original disciplines when JCU (then as The University College of Townsville) was established in 1961 on the Pimlico campus, and the first academic staff member appointed by the college (Dr Joe Baker) was to the Department of Chemistry.Subsequent appointments were made including Professor Geoffrey Richards as the Foundation Nevitt Professor of Chemistry.
In 1970, the Department of Chemistry moved to the new Douglas campus, and the University College of Townsville became the James Cook University of North Queensland. At the time there were eight academic lecturing staff and two tutors with extended tenure.
