    Foundation Studies at Otago Polytechnic

    The School of Foundation Learning offers open-entry foundation programmes in a range of subjects that can act as an educational stepping stone for you.

    Our experienced staff can help figure out a study pathway that could begin with a foundation programme, and end with a degree or higher!Studying with the School of Foundation Learning is a good way to make new friends and experience New Zealand culture.

    Want to develop better skills to prepare you for employment and feeling a bit overwhelmed? Perhaps you have taken a break from learning and are seeking a way to make a smooth entrance back into the study environment or workplace.

    No matter what your situation, we can help you to reach your goals. There are so many exciting jobs out there and the right qualification and skills will open up a wide range of possibilities for you. Many of our qualifications are recognised both within New Zealand and internationally so you could even think about finding a job overseas. This programme will give you the confidence, study skills and background knowledge to help you succeed – nothing is out of reach!

    Improve your English, numeracy, personal development skills and computing skills. Designed to meet your individual needs, you may also be able to study subjects in areas such as hospitality, business, information technology, horticulture and creative studies. Learn in a supportive environment with guidance from experienced staff and enjoy the flexible programme delivery, allowing you to fit your study into your daily routine; you can enrol either full-time or part-time, in year-long or semester programmes.

    Do you want to learn the four basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in the English language? Study at the Otago Polytechnic Language Centre and enjoy a supportive and welcoming environment where you can make new friends and experience New Zealand culture.

     

    You will learn the English skills you need from experienced English teachers who are very patient and understanding. Class sizes are small and you will be able to take part in small groups to practise your speaking. There is also the chance to meet native speakers and listen to guest speakers. The ESOL programmes are offered from Levels 1-4 and no English language test score is required for entry. They provide a good pathway into academic study and you will be able to enter most of our certificate, diploma or degree qualifications. All four levels offer a flexible study programme so you can start at any time during the semester.

    At Level 4, as well as learning English, you may be able to study other subjects that you are interested in such as business, creative studies, hospitality or sports.  IELTS preparation is included and academic writing, study skills, information skills and computing skills are also available. If you want to learn English for a specific job or subject, English for Specific Purposes is also offered during the Level 4 qualification.

    Decided you want to pursue a career in the healthcare industry but don’t have the required academic qualifications to enter a diploma- or degree-level programme?

    This Certificate offers the perfect solution as it will help you to bridge the gap! Working as a healthcare professional is extremely rewarding as you’ll contribute to the wellbeing of your community and have the chance to really make a difference in people’s lives. There is a worldwide demand for qualified professionals to care for and work with individuals and many of our higher level health qualifications are internationally-recognised and will allow you to apply for registration in New Zealand as a practitioner in your chosen field. Otago Polytechnic offers diploma and/or degree programmes in Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Social Services and Physical Activity, Health and Wellness.

    Study core subjects such as academic communication, mathematics and bioscience for health to prepare you for further learning. Two electives are available during semester two – an introduction to careers in health and an introduction to midwifery (if you are considering a career in Midwifery). Embrace the opportunity to gain confidence, study skills and knowledge in a supportive environment with the guidance and advice from experienced teachers. Benefit from the blended, flexible delivery format, allowing you to fit study around other commitments.

    Would you describe yourself as a hands-on person? Are you interested in making things or finding out how things work? Want to learn in an environment where Māoritaka is incorporated into your daily routine?

    Build a career in the trades and technical fields and help shape the world. Prepare yourself for studying a trade in a learning environment particularly tailored to Māori students. This programme is also suitable if you are non-Māori and believe you would benefit from studying within a kaupapa framework.

    Gain real world experience by undertaking trades-based projects and industry placements, and learn tikaka and te reo as they apply to trades. Develop your literacy, numeracy and computer skills, and enjoy Māoritaka components such as weekly hangi and korero, kapa haka and taiaha training.
