    Foundation Studies at Waikato Institute of Technology

    Certificate in Introduction to Study (Level 4)

    Incorporating the Certificate in Introduction to Study (Level 4) and Certificate in Introduction to Study (Health) (Level 4)

    This full-time 18 week programme is designed to prepare students for further study by developing an understanding of what is expected at tertiary level and by providing opportunities to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in tertiary education.

    There are two streams in this programme:

    • The Level 4 stream is for you if you wish to move on to diploma or degree level study.
    • The Level 4 health stream is for you if you wish to go on to further study in nursing, midwifery, sports science or health-related programmes.


    Certificate in Introduction to Study (Level 2)

    The Certificate in Introduction to Study (Level 2) provides a broad base for students, who have left school with little or no qualifications, to staircase into higher levels of study.

    You will develop an understanding of what is expected at tertiary level, along with the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to continue further study at tertiary leve

    Programme Content

    You will study:

    • Writing Skills including essay writing, assignment preparation, report writing, referencing in-text and compiling bibliographies.
    • Communication Skills including written and oral presentation skills, locating and organising information.
    • Tertiary Study Skills including learning styles, basic principles of learning, reflective journal writing, using technology to support study and assignment preparation
    • Personal Development (Level 2) including self management, study skills, stress management, time management.


     

    National Certificate in Community Support Services (Foundation Skills)

    Starts Mid August
    13 weeks full time equivalent study over 15 weeks
    Domestic Student fees are $1774*

    The National Certificate in Community Support Services will give you the knowledge and skills to provide care for the older person, people with disabilities, people convalescing or people in general.  

    The programme is a combination of workshops, visits to healthcare organisations and hands on work experience with a variety of health care facilities. You’ll learn hands on caring skills from experienced, qualified tutors who cater for your own learning style and provide individual support.

    The modules in the programme will also help you to plan your future, prepare a CV and develop job search and interview skills.

    SPACE: Self Paced Applied Computer Education

    Start at any time
    20 hours per module

    Free to NZ citizens, NZ permanent residents aged 16 or above residing in the Waikato region

    SPACE allows you to learn the basics of computing at your own pace. It is a fantastic way to gain an introduction to computers or improve your existing skills. You use self paced material and have the assistance of a facilitator at each classroom session. 

    You can select any number of modules to enrol in - one, two, or all six if you wish. For each module, you are required to attend a two hour session twice weekly. Assessment for the modules is compulsory.

    Writing Made Easy

    Get the skills to write better assignments, essays and reports. Learn at your own pace, in your own time with any, or all, of the following modules.

    Each module takes approximately 20 hours to complete, and includes quizzes and self tests as you learn.

    Programme Content

    Grammar Online
    This module will help you to understand basic grammar, punctuation, simple sentence structure and commonly confused words.

    Content:

    • Using capitals
    • Contractions
    • Full stops, question marks and exclamation marks
    • Nouns, proper nouns and pronouns
    • Basic sentence structure
    • Direct speech
    • Commonly confused words
    • Verbs
    • Abbreviations
    • Plurals
    • Commas
    • Agreement of subject and verb

    Writing Online
    Following on from Grammar Online, this module will explain how to make your writing clear, concise and considerate.

    • Review tests

    Report Writing Online
    This module will help you to understand the rules for writing reports.

    • Writing and sourcing factual information for findings
    • Writing conclusions consistent with the evidence presented
    • Writing recommendations
    • Report format
    • Language of reports
    • Proofreading
    • Review tests
