Ohio
Ohio is an East North Central state bordered by Michigan and Lake Erie to the north, Pennsylvania to the east, and Kentucky and West Virginia to the south. It was the first state from the Northwest Territory to enter the Union. As early as the 1800's, Ohio was known as the "Gateway State" because its roads, railways, and canals connected the Eastern and Western parts of the United States.
The name "Ohio" originated from Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river". The state's capital is Columbus. Its cities include Cincinnati, Toledo, and Akron. Ohio is nicknamed the "Buckeye State" after the buckeye tree, which used to grow abundantly on the state's hills and plains and whose seed resembles a deer's (buck's) eye.
Ohio is known for its industrial output. Only California and New York surpass the state in that category. This is because of its natural resources, including a plentiful supply of water and vast mineral deposits, which include coal and salt. Akron, the home of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, was once known as the "Rubber Capital of the World."
While some students cite challenges in finding new and exciting ways to spend their recreational time in the state of Ohio itself, they are also quick to point out the benefits of a relatively low cost of living. International students interested in studying in Ohio should count as a benefit the potential for an increased amount of expendable income (spending money)! Ohio can prove a wonderful transitional state for international students looking to explore, save some money, and adapt to the United States for some time prior to entering a long-term academic program commitment in their prospective field of study. Some of the prestigious schools include Kent State University, Ohio State University, Ohio University and University of Cincinnati.
