Overview of Student Visas for Australia
For people wishing to study in Australia there are 7 different Visa Subclasses they can choose from, depending upon the educational level they intend to undertake.
These visas allows students to undertake studies in non formal courses, English language courses, Primary and Secondary School (usually defined as the first 12 years of study), TAFE / Technical College and University.
The level of study the student intends to undertake will determine which visa Subclass they apply for and it is possible to combine different levels when applying for a visa. For example, if a student intends to undertake both TAFE (e.g. a Diploma) and University (e.g. a Bachelor Degree) studies, they would apply for the visa which relates to the Bachelor Degree as this is their final level, or Principal Course, of study.
For students under 18 years of age it is also possible for a parent or guardian to obtain a visa that would allow them to accompany the study to Australia and remain here whilst the student is studying.
