IT at The University of Nebraska Omaha

The College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T) creates capable technology leaders who will thrive in a globally competitive environment. It offers programs of study in the following areas:  Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, Information Assurance, Information Technology, IT Innovation, and Management Information Systems (MIS)

Students will benefit from the college’s commitment to balance emerging disciplines with the bedrock fundamentals of information technology. The surroundings of a metropolitan campus in an emerging city offer chances to research and grow through associations with industry partners in technology. Bioinformatics is an emerging, rapidly expanding scientific discipline that addresses problems related to the collection, processing, analysis of vast amounts of data describing the structure and function of biological systems. Bioinformatics is a truly interdisciplinary science, combining:

    • computer science
    • molecular biology
    • chemistry
    • mathematics

Bioinformatics merges computer and information science with the study of genetic information and biological structures. Bioinformatics allows researchers to open new windows of insight into our genetic makeup, providing pathways to understanding disease processes and creating novel diagnostic and treatment strategies. There is an immense and growing need for experts in this field, in order to capitalize on the growing body of knowledge regarding the genome. A graduate of the UNO Bioinformatics program will gain a solid background in a wide variety of positions in the biomedical and biotechnology industries, for graduate study in bioinformatics or related areas and with the addition of a few courses, medical school.

Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics

    Vision Statement

The Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics (BMI) degree is designed to develop the next generation of Biomedical informatics specialists who are uniquely positioned to advance research and practice in contemporary information and knowledge management that impact Biomedical, clinical and translational research, healthcare services, healthcare practice, public health care, and healthcare delivery in general.  Graduates will be able to use their preparation to investigate and apply information and communication technologies to solve problems in the related Biomedical fields in a comprehensive, competitive and effective way. The program is designed as a research-oriented program with the goals of preparing graduate students to conduct advanced basic and applied research while capably serving as prospective employees in academic research as well as in the IT healthcare industry.  The program is geared towards motivated traditional students, technology specialists or health care clinicians with the appropriate educational background that are ready to expand their knowledge of contemporary biomedical informatics issues and become biomedical informaticians in academic, clinical, or organizational settings. The Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics (BMI) program is a joint program offered at UNO and UNMC.

Fundamental, Collaborative, Excellent in our Field

Computer Science (CS) is the fundamental discipline in information technology. As a member of the UNO community for more than 30 years, the CS department has left a lasting imprint on the College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T). The department boasts a culture of collaboration and an agile approach, which allows it to evolve with changing technologies. The shelf life of information in computer science is short, so our instructors are continually learning to ensure that they stay on top of this ever-changing industry. That same commitment to new information is shared by our students and used when evaluating our curriculum. The department offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Computer Science and a doctorate in Information Technology. Here are a few things you should know about Computer Science:

    • UNO was the first Nebraska university to receive computer science accreditation from the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET
    • Computer Science professionals build tools and software for all kinds of people, from video gamers to scientists to CEOs involved in global business
    • A Computer Science degree can help you attain a job as a programmer, software developer, artificial intelligence specialist or an applications developer—and many more
    • The department offers a number of interdisciplinary courses that are cross-taught by instructors from other related departments
    • For motivated students who wish to gain quicker access to the job market, we offer an integrated undergraduate-graduate program. This intensive program of study allows students to complete a bachelors and masters degree in five years
    • We have faculty and students conducting research in software development, language systems, robotics, data mining, high performance computing and other related areas

We recognize that learning extends beyond the classroom, and thankfully the Omaha community is ripe with internship opportunities for students. The department also provides forums for group work in numerous courses, including the capstone courses near the completion of the degree that allow students to partner together and simulate workplace dynamics.

    Information Assurance

Why would you want to major in Information Assurance?

    • If you want to be prepared for future graduate studies in Information Assurance, Computer Science, or MIS
    • If you want to pursue a career as a Computer Crimes Law Enforcement Official or Systems Analyst
    • Not interested in any of those?  How about a career as a System Security Administrator or Network Security Professional?
    • Still not convinced?  What about pursuing a career as an IA Researcher, Computer Security Specialist, or Secure Systems Developer?

    An Information Assurance degree will

    • Provide students with a foundation for graduate study
    • Prepare students for entry into computer security professions
    • Provide students with lifelong personal and professional growth opportunities through a variety of career paths
    • Educate students to assume leadership positions in diversified, rapidly changing fields of information assurance and computer security
    PhD in Information Technology

    Multidisciplinary Emphasis, Competitive, Research Intensive

The Ph.D. program in Information Technology at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) is a research-intensive, multidisciplinary program focused around the core areas of computer science, management information systems and interdisciplinary informatics. Our vision is to become one of the top programs that offer a doctoral degree in information technology, both in terms of scholarship and the placement of our graduates. The program admits exceptional students that have demonstrated a strong foundation in the core areas with high potential and commitment towards future academic achievement and success.

    Mission

    • Understanding of the theory and application of information technology focused around the core areas of computer science, management information systems and interdisciplinary informatics
    • Knowledge of the analysis, design, development and implementation of current and future information technologies
    • Competence in conducting and managing high-quality, basic and applied research
    • Solid grounding in the fundamentals of academic teaching
    • Strong foundation in multidisciplinary and emergent areas in information technology

    Applied Research

Faculty members are very productive in their research and compete for funding from competitive sources such as the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense. Most faculty conduct research in one of the three disciplines (computer science, management information systems, interdisciplinary informatics) that comprise our program. Within these areas, research interests include: artificial intelligence, data and text mining, software engineering, biomedical informatics, information assurance, data analytics, database management, IT infrastructure and many more.
