University of Manchester scholarships and bursaries

As one the country’s leading centres of research and learning, The University of Manchester is committed to attracting and supporting the very best students. If you have the talent and ability, they want to make sure that you have the opportunity to study here regardless of your financial circumstances.

More than a third of their students will receive bursaries of up to £3,000 per year and many will be offered even more generous support. Students who are eligible will be able to choose how they receive this support – either as a cash bursary or as discount on their fees or accommodation bill.

UK students are not required to submit an application for any of the University’s means-tested awards. They will automatically identify eligible students on the basis of the household income data provided by the Student Loans Company.

    The Manchester Bursary

The Manchester Bursary is available to any student who is registered on an eligible undergraduate degree course at The University of Manchester and who has had a full financial assessment carried out by Student Finance.

    National Scholarship Programme

The University of Manchester has decided that awards funded through the National Scholarship Programme will be identical in length, value and criteria to its own Manchester Bursary. As such, some students who are to be awarded the Manchester Bursary will be funded through the National Scholarship programme for Year 1 only. It will provide students with a household income of less than £25,000 with £3,000 in support.

    Foundation Year Bursaries

The University of Manchester is also offering generous financial support worth up to £5,000 for students enrolling in its foundation 'Year 0' programmes in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Science and Engineering. With the aim of facilitating progression directly onto the relevant undergraduate course, these one-year programmes are designed to attract students who are from diverse educational backgrounds or who have unsuitable qualifications.

    Opportunity Manchester Scholarships

Opportunity Manchester Scholarships of £1,000 per year will be awarded to students meeting either of the following criteria:

    • They have successfully applied for a place at The University of Manchester having completed the Manchester Access Programme (MAP) for local Year 12/Year 13 students;
    • They are under the age of 25 and are currently or have been in public care for a minimum of three months.

These awards are generously supported by our alumni community.

Fee discounts for year abroad/year in industry

They want to encourage you to take up opportunities to spend a year abroad or in structured industry placements. For students taking up such opportunities they will offer to waive or significantly discount the tuition fee for those who are from less well-off backgrounds.

In addition, students spending a year studying abroad can expect to be considered for the cash element of the Manchester Bursary at 50% of the standard rate.

    International students starting in 2013

Studying in the UK can be great value for money. UK degree courses are generally shorter than in the US and Australia because they are more intensive.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your study at the University and include charges for registration, tuition, supervision, examinations and graduation. Payment of fees will also entitle you to membership of the Library, the Students' Union and the Athletic Union.

To provide you with certainty in your financial planning, the University has fixed tuition fees for new international students for the duration of their course. Any offer of a place at the University is made on the understanding that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the entire duration of your period of study.

Fees vary for each course. The level of tuition fee you will pay varies depending on factors such as your nationality and which country you are resident in.
