Tasmania Art
Art at Tasmania University
The Tasmanian School of Art is a creative hub engaging locally and globally in critical thinking and contemporary art and design practice. Our world class facilities, teaching and research programs and intimate collaborative communities provide a rich learning platform.
Hybrid contemporary art practice
Whilst teaching and learning is delivered through a studio specific approach, cross-disciplinary engagement and dialogue forms an important part of our programs. In addition to compulsory non-studio-specific units such as - Core Studies and Theory of Practice - students are encouraged to participate in cross-disciplinary projects, exhibitions and critiques. Studio specific facilities, technicians and workshops are accessible to all students irrespective of the studio/s they are enrolled in.
The experience we offer
The Tasmanian School of Art provides a rich platform choreographed to inspire the visual artists and designers of the future. Globally respected for the calibre of its research, quality of its teaching and learning programs, and character of its graduates, The School offers a range of post and undergraduate degree courses in Fine Arts and Visual Communications.
Students have access to in-house studios and facilities that include sculpture, furniture, printmaking and digital production workshops, photographic darkrooms, a specialist art supply shop and an outstanding on campus library. Housed in purpose-built facilities and situated on Hobart’s spectacular waterfront, students have easy access to general ‘capital city’ amenities, the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre and MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art).
The ‘on site’ Plimsoll and Entrepôt Galleries regularly present challenging contemporary exhibitions that engage the broader community and support our diverse teaching programs. The Art Forum program hosts weekly public presentations by visiting international scholars and practitioners.
The School of Art has an enviable reputation as one of Australia’s most innovative tertiary art institutions. In 1981 it was the first institution in Australia to introduce a Master of Fine Arts, subsequently establishing a PhD program in the mid 1990’s. Our teaching staff has nationally and internationally respected profiles as artists, designers and writers. Our current students, alumni and staff maintain ongoing connections with local, national and international contemporary art and design exhibitions and events.
