Newcastle Science
Science at New Castle University
School of Environmental and Life Sciences
Our School is one of the largest in the University and has a diversity of science-based disciplines. The academic staff are all specialists in their fields and are committed to delivering the highest quality outcomes in research and teaching. We strive for excellence in our scholarship and the school provides a unique opportunity for science training via the rich multi-disciplinary profile of its staff and facilities.
Areas of Study
Applied Sciences
Applied Sciences is wholly contained at the Central Coast Campus (Ourimbah) with a diverse range of research and teaching activities including:
- Exercise and sports science;
- Food science and human nutrition;
Biological Sciences
Biological Sciences span a wide range of interests from genes, microbes and plants to animal reproduction, conservation and the environment; in our School, we promote multi-disciplinary research with highly skilled professional training for undergraduate biologists.
Chemistry
Chemistry is a major component of many areas of study within our school, including biology, applied sciences, environmental science and earth science. Our Chemistry graduates are sought after in exciting growth industries such as synthetic materials, energy storage, drug design and analytical services.
Earth Sciences
The Earth Sciences are a unique blend of the traditional fields of:
- Physical Geography;
- Geology;
- Climatology; and
- Oceanography;
- Soil Science.
Earth Scientists, skilled in the fields of mineral and resource extraction, or in mine site rehabilitation and monitoring, are in high demand as the population of the earth expands and its resources decrease.
Environmental Science & Management
Environmental Science and Management is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on human interactions with the environment and addressing human-induced impacts on natural systems. The academics in this discipline have expertise in areas such as environmental fate of contaminants, conservation biology, restoration ecology, ecotoxicology, marine science, and the social sciences. Graduates of the program are highly sought after as environmental consultants and scientists with industry and government agencies. The program is offered on both the Callaghan and Central Coast campuses and incorporates research and training in:
- Marine Science;
- Ecosystems & Biodiversity;
- Sustainability;
- Earth Systems Science
Geography and Environmental Studies
Geography and Environmental Studies involves understanding the relationships between place, people and environment, and the variation in processes and patterns in these relationships across space and time.
School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences
The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is a dynamic School offering exciting opportunities at the forefront of modern undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning in Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. The research carried out by staff within the School is internationally acclaimed. Our goal is bring the excitement of our disciplines to the broader community.
Areas of Study
The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is the principal location for several Faculty of Science & Information Technology Undergraduate, Postgraduate Coursework and Research Higher Degree programs which offer specialisations in Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. The major degree program in mathematics and statistics is the Bachelor of Mathematics and the major program in physics is the Bachelor of Science, where students can major in either physics or photonics. Students may also co-major in mathematics or statistics in the Bachelor of Science by combining these with other majors to suit their interests and aspirations. Further information on the Bachelor of Science, particularly the mathematics requirements, and suggested pathways and program checklists can be found on the Faculty of Science and Information Technology website.
High achieving students often choose to combine studies in mathematics or physics with other degree programs. The Bachelor of Mathematics/Bachelor of Science program is valuable for both those wanting to enhance their studies of science with the underlying mathematical models, and to further develop their mathematical studies with applications in the sciences. Similarly Engineering, Arts and Law studies can be enhanced by combining with a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Mathematics. Other currently offered combined degree programs in these areas are:
Mathematics
- Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical)/Bachelor of Mathematics
- Bachelor of Engineering (Computer)/Bachelor of Mathematics
- Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical)/Bachelor of Mathematics
- Bachelor of Mathematics/Bachelor of Computer Science
Science
- Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science
- Bachelor of Engineering (Computer)/Bachelor of Science - Physics major
- Bachelor of Engineering (Telecommunications)/Bachelor of Science - Photonics major
- Bachelor Science/Bachelor of Laws
Students interested in a teaching career in high school physics enrol in the Bachelor of Teachng (Secondary)/Bachelor of Science program. Students interested in a teaching career in high school mathematics enrol in the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/Bachelor of Mathematics program
