Professional English ProgramsThese programs are designed for professionals such as teachers, lawyers, diplomats, accountants or managers. The programs provide tuition and practice in the English language relevant to their workplace situations. These programs aim to improve participants’ job opportunities and enhance their understanding of English speaking culture. These courses ensure an enriching learning environment, including practical experience in the specific language skills that participants need in their chosen professions. Specific emphasis is given to English proficiency and practice in professional work place situations. For example, involvement in these courses will improve their English through interacting in learning tasks in the classroom and through visiting actual work places at centres in Canberra, for example, political institutions, educational centres or social venues related to their professions. Professionals working in these centres will meet the students and discuss shared interests with them. The students enjoy using and improving on their English through these experiences. | UC Course English Preparation ProgramsThese programs aim to raise participants’ skills and confidence to succeed, both academically and professionally. The programs provide intensive Academic English tuition for specific groups of students, 20 hours per week for 4 or more weeks prior to studies in UC degree courses. These weeks are followed by ongoing language tuition during the students' degree course studies. Ongoing tuition during the degree focuses on helping participants in course assignments, as well as in the requirements of their future careers. Although the courses are primarily concerned with academic reading, writing and listening skills, cultural outings are also included so that students can learn more about Australian culture. Examples of preparatory English include English for Lawyers studying Masters of Law, and English for Nurses studying an In-Service Program. | |||
