    The School of Education (Magill and Mawson Lakes) is one of the largest Schools in the University with over seventy staff. We offer wide range of programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and research higher degrees are offered. Our programs span early childhood, schooling, and adult education.

    Our academic staff are involved with local, national and international communities. Our staff are also involved in funded research projects involving areas including: literacy assessment, the teaching of reading, cyber-bullying, teacher resilience, workplace change, public purposes of schools, parents' networks, literacy coaching, the new SACE, play and early childhood, citizen science, new directions in VET policy and practice, teaching English to new arrivals, university outreach and aspirations, practitioner inquiry, antiracism and pedagogy, and the digital world for university TESOL.

    Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary and Primary)

    Duration:  4 years

    The Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary and Primary) program prepares generalist junior primary and primary teachers to teach across the core curriculum learning areas. UniSA graduates enter the workforce as well educated professionals who are competent teachers committed to educational improvement.

    Bachelor of Education (Primary and Middle)

    Duration:  4 years

    The Bachelor of Education (Primary and Middle) prepares graduates to teach children in the primary and middle years of schooling, from years three to ten. There is a need for teachers to be skilled in appropriate methodology related to middle years schooling. This degree addresses teaching pre-adolescent and adolescent students and allows students to specialise in particular learning areas.

    Graduates are qualified to teach in both primary and middle school educational settings and will have completed studies in education, curriculum, and teaching and learning.

    Master of Teaching (Middle and Secondary)

    Duration: 2 years

    The Program is offered at Mawson Lakes campus, UniSA and is equivalent to two years’ full-time study but for domestic students is usually offered in intensive mode over 1.5 years. As a result, applicants will be required to attend summer schools and other intensive course components as well as access online materials. International students complete the two year full-time equivalent program of study but commence their first year of study in Study Period 5.

    In addition, an innovative approach to the practicum/professional experience will see students involved with schools for a set time each week and for approximately seven weeks full-time in the first year and six weeks during the second year. Applicants need to ensure they can fulfil these commitments.

    Master of Teaching (Early Childhood)

    Professional Experience (practicum) courses are offered in all study periods of a full-time program. This program develops graduates with:

    • knowledge of early childhood approaches to learning, for example, play-based
    • a professional approach to their work
    • a wide knowledge of early childhood curriculum
    • knowledge of children's development in context, social, emotional and thinking, and the application of this knowledge to enhance children's development including learning and behaviour
    • an insight into the issues surrounding the social contexts of education including equity in education and care, and Indigenous students in education.

    Master of Teaching (Primary and Middle)

    Duration: 2 years

    Master of Teaching (Junior Primary and Primary)

    Duration: 2 years

    This program will help to develop graduates who are well prepared to enter the education profession with:

    • a range of pedagogical skills necessary to be an effective professional educator;
    • skills in motivating learners;
    • an understanding of curriculum for this age group;
    • an insight into the issues surrounding the social context of education including equity in education;
    • knowledge of theories of learning;
    • extensive teaching experience in school settings.
