Swinburne College has English language courses from elementary to advanced.
We have new courses starting every five weeks, so you can start when it suits you.
Our main campus is in Hawthorn. It is about 10-15 minutes by train from Melbourne’s city centre.

General English, Levels 1–3
(Elementary – Intermediate)
General English will help improve your everyday English. It covers the four skills areas: listening, reading, writing and speaking. It will focus on increasing your confidence using English. Classes include:
- Listening and oral communication skills
- Grammar and vocabulary development
- Supervised independent learning
- Excursions and social activities.
English for Academic Purposes, Levels 4 & 5
(Upper-intermediate – Advanced)
English for Academic Purposes is designed to prepare you for direct entry to Swinburne. It focuses on the language, critical thinking and academic literacy skills required for your main course.
Level 4 introduces you to the language and study skills needed for university in Australia. Level 5 focuses on the language skills specific to your study area – whether it's business, design, engineering or information technology (IT).
You will develop your skills in:
- Assignment, report and essay writing
- Academic reading, listening and note-taking
- Communication and interaction in the academic environment
- Oral presentations and seminar discussions
- Research and library techniques.
Intensive English (Advanced)
If you have already achieved the English language entry requirements for your main course at Swinburne, you can undertake a five-week intensive program to refresh your skills and prepare for academic study.
It focuses on the language skills you’ll need for your course and includes an orientation to study and social interaction in Australia.
IELTS Exam Preparation
This course is designed to prepare you for – and improve your chance of success in – the IELTS exam. It covers the four skills areas: listening, reading, writing and speaking. This course will help you:
- Understand the IELTS exam format
- Improve your speaking accuracy and fluency
- Analyse and construct effective writing tasks
- Develop strategies for the listening and reading tests
- Receive extensive feedback from experienced IELTS teachers.
Study tours
We also host personalised study tours where you can get a taste of Swinburne and discover what Melbourne has to offer. You can focus on English language tuition or combine it with a short program in business, multimedia or information technology.
