    The Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA) is the independent, government regulatory body for the real estate industry in New Zealand.  We provide independent oversight of the real estate industry, ensure a high standard of service and professionalism within the industry, and provide increased protection for buyers and sellers of real estate.The responsibilities are:

    • Licensing of people and companies working in the real estate industry
    • Maintaining a register of licensees which is available to the public
    • Investigating concerns about the behaviour of licensee's
    • Setting industry standards
    • Providing information to buyers and sellers of real estate

    If you want to carry out real estate agency work you must be licensed under the Real Estate Agents Act 2008, unless you are exempt. Classes of licence:

    • Agent (Individual) - this allows the licensee to carry out real estate agency work on his or her own account (whether in partnership or otherwise)
    • Agent (Company) - this allows a company to operate as a real estate agency. At least one officer of the company must hold an Agent's licence as an individual.
    • Branch manager - this allows the licensee to carry out real estate agency work for or on behalf of an agent
    • Salesperson - this allows the licensee to carry out real estate agency work for or on behalf of an agent. A salesperson must be supervised by an agent or a branch manager when carrying out any real estate agency work.

    How to get a licence

    You can apply to become a real estate salesperson after you have completed a prescribed course of study. Figure 1 outlines the process of getting a salesperson’s licence.
