Swinburne University
Swinburne University of Technology
George Swinburne arrived in Australia as a migrant in 1886 and quickly established himself as a businessman and civic leader. He was also a practical visionary. In 1907 he put forward a proposal to establish a technical college in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. He had a clear mission in mind: to provide technical education to a sector of society that was otherwise denied further education. |

George Swinburne’s vision and passion saw the Eastern Suburbs Technical College established on the 8 July 1908. Eighty young men and boys enrolled in classes for the 1909 school year. Subjects represented the interests of the time. They included carpentry, plumbing and gas fitting. In 1913 the college changed its name to Swinburne Technical College to commemorate the man who had worked tirelessly towards its inception. Swinburne is an innovative education institution. Swinburne is a dual sector institution offering both TAFE courses and higher education degrees. A personalized approach to learning puts our students at the heart of everything they do. They have developed a flexible learning structure, so that students can build a program that suits their individual needs. From vocational learning to postdoctoral studies, their students have more options. They consistently rank number one in Melbourne for teaching quality and graduate satisfaction.

Candice Concessio Bachelor of Science (Psychology/Psychophysiology) alumnae from India "Swinburne University offers a myriad of courses. I chose this course because it was an exceptional combination of subjects. The part that I like most is doing research on a topic and writing reports about it – just as you would in a case study. "My course is comprised of biology, psychology, and psychophysiology strands which makes the study of the human body a very exciting experience.
