AUT University offers early years, primary, secondary and tertiary teacher training courses at a variety of entry levels, including unique specialisations in Montessori, Pasifika and Steiner.The School of Education is also the only university to offer postgraduate qualifications in career development - Master of Career Development and Graduate Diploma in Career Development
Undergraduate study
Undergraduate courses provide students with a solid grounding in the study of education and teaching.
Courses set students on the path to further education and research, or give an opportunity to move directly into the workforce as teachers at the early childhood, primary, secondary or tertiary level. The Bachelor of Education is a requirement for those wishing to teach in early childhood centres and schools in New Zealand.
Specialisation in the third year is possible for both Early Childhood Teaching and Primary Teaching as follows:

Primary teaching specialisations
Secondary teaching
- Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching - Student teachers who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching are eligible to seek provisional registration as a teacher and apply for teaching positions in secondary schools.
Tertiary teaching
- Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Teaching - Graduates will be qualified to teach and work with adults in the community, business, industry, polytechnics, private training establishments and universities.
Career Development
A Graduate course is also offered for those who are working in the career development field but who lack formal qualifications, as well as those who aspire to work in this field.
