Law

Law  is a system of rules and guidelines which are enforced through social institutions to govern behavior, wherever possible. It shapes politics, economics and society in numerous ways and serves as a social mediator of relations between people. Contract law regulates everything from buying a bus ticket to trading on derivatives markets.

Property law defines rights and obligations related to the transfer and title of personal and real property. Trust law applies to assets held for investment and financial security, while tort law allows claims for compensation if a person's rights or property are harmed. If the harm is criminalised in legislation, criminal law offers means by which the state can prosecute the perpetrator. Constitutional law provides a framework for the creation of law, the protection of human rights and the election of political representatives. Administrative law is used to review the decisions of government agencies, while international law governs affairs between sovereign states in activities ranging from trade to environmental regulation or military action. Writing in 350 BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle declared, "The rule of law is better than the rule of any individual."

Otago Law

Law is one of the University's longest established disciplines, lectures having started in July 1873, just two years after the University itself opened. Today the Faculty of Law has 26 full-time teaching staff, drawn from seven different countries, 12 part-time teaching staff, and the equivalent of approximately 800 full-time students, the majority from outside the immediate region.

Waikato Law

The Law Faculty was founded in 1990 and adopted the principles of professionalism, biculturalism and the study of law in context. The challenge for the Faculty now is to interpret each of these against a background of social and economic change.

The University of Canterbury School of Law, founded in 1873, is well established as one of the leading research and teaching Law Schools in New Zealand. With a long history of academic scholarship, the UC School of Law enjoys a well-deserved reputation for excellence in teaching, high quality writing and research as well as for producing outstanding graduates.

The Faculty of Law offers outstanding opportunities for postgraduate legal research. The faculty welcomes visiting lecturers from esteemed universities and Law Schools such as the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Harvard Law School, Michigan Law School, William and Mary and many others, to teach on its intensive programmes.
