In the early 90s, USM had begun the planning of School of Dental Sciences, to complement the existing School of Medical Sciences and School of Health Sciences.

The School of Dental Sciences, USM is to be the centre of excellence in academia, innovations and research, and be the catalyst and leader for new knowledge in teaching, learning and research for Malaysian higher education and the world.

The School of Dental Sciences, USM is committed to the pursuit of excellence and innovations in academia, services, research and development of human resources, by fostering a conducive educational environment and promoting holistic development programmes to meet national needs through exploring new frontiers of technology, and remain globally competitive to fulfill our community responsibility.

The undergraduate curriculum is innovative, taking into consideration the current trend in dental education and oral related ill-health. The multi-professional approach in dental education is the key element in teaching-learning activities. This would enable professionalism, leadership qualities and clinical skills are attained to the highest level.

The school offers postgraduate clinical courses in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontics, Pediatric Dentistry  and Community Oral Health (Dental Public Health). Postgraduate training through research mode in all discipline of dentistry is also available. Initial plans are on the way to introduce other clinical specialty training such as orthodontics. Current research activities cover a broad spectrum of nine niche areas that are biomaterial sciences, oral health management, craniofacial sciences, oral tissue engineering, oral cancer, implants, natural products, oral immunology and medical imaging . The school is proud of its international reputation for research, clinical and academic excellence from a team of staff who are at the leading edge of their profession:
